Chapter Sixteen

Finally, Violet heard sirens approaching in the distance. The local fire department’s emergency services vehicle was the first to arrive. The EMT jumped from the vehicle, looking at Violet with confusion and suspicion, then shined a flashlight over the small cluster of the gathered inhabitants of the farm.

“It’s not…” Violet looked down at her body, blankly inspecting her arms and torso. “It’s not my blood.” Panic clutched at her heart, stealing her breath. Her skin was slick with another person’s blood. Tears of panic welled in her eyes. Turning away from the EMT, she doubled over, gasping for air. The emergency vehicle’s flashing lights shrank to tiny pinpoints in her vision. She heard the arrival of another ambulance, followed by hurried, insistent shouting.

The EMT draped a blanket over Violet’s shoulders before guiding her over to the truck and sitting her inside. “It’s okay. Just take deep breaths, slowly.”

Violet pulled in ragged breaths, but she was regaining her composure. She watched as medics dressed in blue uniforms loaded Sam, who was already on a stretcher, into the back of the second ambulance.

“Can I get dressed?” she asked the female EMT. “I feel like half the town’s about to see me in my underwear.” Violet tried to smile weakly, but it turned into more of a grimace.

“This was not an accident, right?”

Violet shook her head. “No.”

“Then maybe you should just stay wrapped up until the police talk to you. I don’t know if they’ll want to make a record of any of that stuff on you or not.” Her shoulders hitched toward her ears in apology. “I’m sorry. I don’t know the rules about that stuff, and this is a really weird scene. So just to be sure. Okay?”

“Okay.” Violet nodded. Nothing on her body was going to give them any clues about what had gone on there, but pitching an argument would probably raise suspicion.

A county police patrol car pulled up, and Kevin jumped out, slamming its door behind him. His panicked eyes scanned the scene, and when they found Violet, he stalked across the lawn toward her. The EMT stood protectively next to Violet. Oh, great…

“Are you okay?” Kevin asked, his voice strained.

Violet nodded, drawing the blanket tighter around herself. “Yeah. They’re taking Sam.” She pointed toward the ambulance as it pulled away.

He turned to look in the direction of the retreating ambulance. More flashing lights appeared in the distance, signaling the imminent arrival of more police.

“And he took Ivy.” Her voice was thick with checked emotion. She swallowed hard, pushing back tears.

“Shit, they said there was an intruder. I thought maybe you were…” He reached out to touch her, but he faltered as his eyes traveled to her body then to the EMT, who was watching him intently. “Whose blood is that?” he asked, locking eyes with the EMT.

The woman cocked her head, motioning for him to step away and speak with her. He followed her around the front of the truck, into the headlights, folding his arms across his chest.
